ETHIOPIA IAIPs

Integrated Agro-Industrial Parks (IAIPs) are a tool for agricultural modernization and agribusiness development. IAIPs are Special Economic Zones, with state-of-the-art infrastructure facilities to provide a conducive environment for companies engaged in agro-inputs, high-tech greenhouse cultivation, focus crop processing, other agro commodities processing, food processing, agri-engineering and associated areas.

This website is a one-stop information hub on the four Integrated Agro-Industrial Parks (IAIPs) developed by the Government of Ethiopia and implemented by the Ministry of Trade and Industry with the support of UNIDO. The aim is to attract private sector investments, create jobs, boost exports, reduce urban and rural poverty and overall agricultural transformation of the country. This website provides information for a wide range of stakeholders, including local beneficiaries and community members, regional and national stakeholders, domestic and international investors.

IAIPs across Ethiopia

The four Integrated Agro-Industrial Parks (IAIPs) are:

  • Bure IAIP in Amhara region (North West)
  • Bulbula IAIP in Oromia region (Central)
  • Yirgalem in Sidama region (South)
  • Baeker in Tigray region (North)

The IAIPs are supported by the development of associated Rural Transformation Centers (RTCs) across their catchment areas for the aggregation and primary processing of agricultural products. The primary feature of IAIPs and RTCs is the clustering of essential infrastructure, utilities, and services required for business operations and growth.

Four (4) Regional Industrial Parks Development Corporations (RIPDCs), accountable to regional boards, are responsible for the development of IAIPs and RTCs in their respective region and own the infrastructure.

Infrastructure and facilities at IAIPs

Independent firms grouped together within the IAIPs can gain economies of scale and positive externalities by sharing infrastructure and taking advantage of opportunities for bulk purchasing and selling, training courses and extension services.

Ethiopia’s IAIPs include open area production zones and have modern infrastructure. General infrastructure includes roads, power, water, communications, drainage, sewerage, a sewage treatment plant and an effluent treatment plant, among others. Specialized infrastructure consists of cold storage units, quarantine facilities, quality control labs, quality certification centres, raw material storage and central processing centres, among others.

Each IAIP is served by a network of Rural Transformation Centres (RTCs) which provide linkages to producers. There are 28 Rural Transformation Centres (RTCs) that serve as raw material aggregation points in the catchment areas (100 km radius) of each of the IAIPs. Rural transformation centres include warehouses, input supply, sorting, grading, extension services, pre-processing activities and microfinance.

Public and private partners support farmers to increase production and productivity to supply raw materials of required quantity and quality to the industries in the parks.

Investment opportunities at IAIPs

There are various agro-food processing investment opportunities at the parks. These include:

  • Fruit juice/pulp/slice/concentrate/dehydration
  • Tomato paste and puree
  • Starch
  • Coffee and tea
  • Vegetable pickling
  • Spice powder, oils and oleoresin
  • Grading and packing pure spices
  • Essential oils from herbs
  • Floral concentrates
  • Vegetable oil and other products
  • Bakery, confectionery
